WORKSHOP ON “IMPLEMENTING GENOMIC MEDICINE IN THE CLINICAL SETTING”

Organized by the Human Genetics Unit, Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo

Date: Monday 10th February 2020

Time: 8:30 am – 12:30 pm

Venue: Board Room, Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, 25, Kynsey Road, Colombo 7

Genomic Medicine plays a vital role in the clinical management of patients throughout their life cycle. With the advent of advanced genomic technologies, genetic variants which lead to risk of numerous disease processes are being continually identified. As a result, the necessity to provide timely and useful genetic health information to patients and families is steadily increasing. This requires healthcare professionals to become well-informed in the core concepts of medical genetics and genomics and their applications in medicine and healthcare. With the rapid progress in technology, it is necessary for healthcare professionals to be in touch with the latest advances in this field so that they are able to gain a better understanding and knowledge of the clinical applications of genetics and genomics data in human health and disease and provide appropriate genetic information and advice to patients and their families.

This workshop will enable the healthcare professionals to develop a basic understanding and knowledge of the core concepts in medical genetics and genomic medicine and their applications in medicine and healthcare. It provides training in understanding the effects of chromosomal abnormalities and genetic variations on human health and disease, and the use of clinical evaluation and genetic testing in the diagnosis of genetic disorders and risk estimation, selecting appropriate genetic and genome-level diagnostic tests, interpreting results and providing accurate genetic information and advice to patients, their families and the public at large.

Registration Fee: Rs. 2,000/- (Refreshments, stationery and certificate of attendance are included).

Registrations will be limited to 50 participants on a first come, first serve basis. Register on or before 7th February 2020.
