14th February : departure at 15.00 & 17.00 from Entrance Lobby
The tours will take approximately one and a half hours and will be led by students of the University of Colombo Clinical Society.
We plan to tour the historic buildings in the Colombo Medical School (now Faculty of Medicine, Colombo) and learn about the administrators and philanthropists that made it possible. There will be a brief account of the development of the first civil hospitals including the General Hospital, Colombo (now the National Hospital of Sri Lanka) and the De Soysa Lying-in Home (now the De Soysa Hospital for Women). We will return to the Faculty quadrangle to talk about other important developments such as the founding of the Bacteriology Institute (now the Medical Research Institute), the Victoria Memorial Eye Hospital (now part of the NHSL) and the Lady Havelock Hospital for Women and Children that, later, evolved into the Lady Ridgeway Hospital.
For those who wish to continue the walk, the Sri Lanka Medical Library invites you to view a selection of valuable items from their collection by strolling over to the Sri Lanka Medical Association on Wijerama Mawatha, named after Dr E M Wijerama, a former President of the then Ceylon Medical Association’ who donated the building.
